Born on March 26, 1934, in Brooklyn, Alan Wolf Arkin grew up in Los Angeles with his parents, David Arkin and Beatrice (Wortis) Arkin. His father, a painter and writer, lost his job as a schoolteacher due to his refusal to disclose his political beliefs during a period marked by the Great Depression. Arkin attended Los Angeles City College and later Bennington College in Vermont, where he pursued acting despite the school being primarily for women at the time.

Arkin's career began as a singer and guitarist with the folk group called the Tarriers, which gained popularity with hits like "The Banana Boat Song." However, he eventually shifted his focus to acting and joined the renowned improvisational comedy troupe, the Second City, in Chicago in 1960. Initially struggling to find success in New York, Arkin's talent gradually emerged as he developed characters and learned from audience reactions.

In 1963, Arkin landed a breakthrough role in the Broadway comedy "Enter Laughing," adapted by Joseph Stein from Carl Reiner's semi-autobiographical novel. Despite being relatively unknown at the time, Arkin captivated audiences and earned critical acclaim, stealing the show alongside established professionals like Sylvia Sidney and Vivian Blaine. His performance garnered high praise from Howard Taubman of The New York Times, who described him as "marvelously funny."

Building on his success, Arkin continued to excel on Broadway, appearing in Murray Schisgal's absurdist farce "Luv" in 1964, directed by Mike Nichols and featuring Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson. This production further solidified Arkin's reputation as a talented actor. In 1966, he transitioned from the stage to the silver screen, believing he had to explore the world of movies.

Arkin's film career began with a nomination for an Academy Award for his debut feature film, "The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming" (1966). This offbeat comedy, depicting the hysteria following a Russian submarine grounding on a Massachusetts island, showcased Arkin's comedic skills and featured his memorable scene teaching his non-English-speaking crew to say "Emergency! Everybody to get from street!"

Throughout his career, Arkin displayed versatility, portraying characters from various nationalities and ethnic backgrounds. His roles ranged from a French detective in "Inspector Clouseau" (1968), a Puerto Rican widower in "Popi" (1969), to a Lithuanian sailor in the television movie "The Defection of Simas Kudirka" (1978). However, he became renowned for his portrayals of likable, bumbling individuals, exemplified by his role as Captain Yossarian in "Catch-22" (1970). Vincent Canby of The New York Times praised Arkin's ability to project intelligence with intense focus, making him simultaneously funny and heroic.

While Arkin found success in comedy, he also delved into dramatic roles. In "Wait Until Dark" (1967), a suspenseful drama starring Audrey Hepburn, he convincingly played an evil drug dealer. His performance as a deaf man helping the disadvantaged in the racially divided South in "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" (1968), based on Carson McCullers' novel, earned him another Oscar nomination.
